Woodland Destruction & restoration

The Emerald Isle has long been famed for her lush green fields and dense, magical forests but times have changed and now less than 1% of the island is covered in the forestry needed!

A local Irish Heritage and Ecology expert, and close friend of Emerald Heritage notes:

“Gaelic Ireland had Ancient Tree Laws this protected many of the woodlands however waves of English conquest and forced settlement that followed meant that this legal system’s days were numbered.

“By the 17th century, the last of the mighty forests of Oak and Elm were being cleared, felled by profiteers and landlords. Within a few decades, Ireland's remaining great forests were raised to the ground. This high-quality timber was one of the largest exports from Ireland. Indeed Irish Oak built many a ship of the British Navy.

“When Ireland lost her cloak of green she lost the source of sustainable building material” and with that came a multitude of problems including the rise of carbon emissions, desolate landscapes, the decline of 42 species of bees by 50% in the last thirty years and the destruction of important natural habitats.”

Restoration

Our bit of Land

Celtic Heritage Foundation owns a bit of land in County Antrim, Ireland, purchased in 2020.  Thanks to Emerald Heritage, our 81-square-foot plot now has young trees growing on it.  Another way of preserving Celtic heritage for generations to come.

Emerald Heritage Organization

Emerald Heritage's mission is "To facilitate everyone to own their own little piece of Ireland, while playing a part in reforesting the Emerald Isle."

Emerald Heritage was formed by Irish people in response to the deep emotional wrench of generations of landless Irish who, often forced by eviction, starvation, unemployment and discrimination, had to leave their home to seek a better future across the globe.

Now they can own their own piece of The Emerald Isle.  For many people, this ownership is a strong emotional statement that echoes across generations.

Celtic Heritage Foundation is not affiliated with Emerald Heritage.  We purchased a plot of land and are sharing the opportunity.

The world is rich in diversity of culture.  In the United States, there is a meeting of many cultures and the ones people came from can be forgotten over generations.

We strive to preserve Celtic heritage for Americans of Celtic descent so they may be connected to the threads of their past, present, and future.
